Review

On the Saturday night I went this rural supersento was bustling with children, grandparents and just about everyone in between. Surprisingly modern in its construction Yupika felt more like a gallery than a bathhouse. The emphasis on stained wood in the construction helped tie the building to the nature that it was set in. It’s use, for example in the beautiful dome that covers the main Mori no Yu bath, showed a sense of clean modern design with a hint towards the region’s fame as a stargazing center. I arrived at this onsen well after dark and although I enjoyed the night sky, I wasn’t able to take in the view of the landscape around the baths. What I could make out did look promising and worth a return visit to see this place in the daytime hours.

I was in the Mori no Yu side which is often featured in Yupika’s promotional materials. The large, not so hot, crescent shaped bath makes up most of the outdoor facilities but I liked the central whirlpool bath the best. Due to the chlorine, the kids, and the cold outside temperatures I felt like I was in a Jacuzzi back in the states. Perhaps at a Travellodge or other roadside hotel like that along the interstate in Colorado. After getting out of the bath, I really wanted to drink a cup of burnt coffee and read the USA Today. I like baths that let me daydream like that. Total relaxation.
On the downside the sauna looked rather small, so small that I gave up on going in, as was the gensen bath which could fit 4 people max.

Second visit, June 2011

I was able to return to Yupika with my wife and baby and had an absolutely wonderful time here. My wife was first hesitant about driving so far, but it's really not too bad from Nishinomiya. Also getting to Yupika from the Miki-Ono exit on the Sanyo highway is quite easy and a short 5-10 minutes.

This time I noticed the free foot bath in front. Hours 9:30-22:00.

I was in the Mizube no Yu
水辺の湯 side this time. Much lower than the Mori no Yu side there are many, many more bugs flying around the rotenbro which is pushed right up to the lake. The centerpiece bath being a sloped shallow crescent shaped tub lined with marble sized smooth river rock that feels great on your back as you lie in the tub.

Like my first time, the downsides of Yupika that it's just pretty small given how popular it is. The dry sauna was packed the entire time and the small cold water bath could only fit two or three people. The gensen bath is also pretty small fitting 4 people side-by-side. Yuko said she had to wait for a shower to wash off on the girls side. These complaints are small and are completely out-shined by the good things.

The restaurant was good and they have 3 different microbrews including the "Ono Koi" beer I had (pictured below) that I can recommend wholeheartedly.
